This Balloon Helicopter is made of a
latex balloon and a plastic propeller. The most important feature is the hollow
propeller hub which directs air into a passage in each propeller blade. The air
jets in the blade tips causes the entire toy to spin, the blades have a
positive angle of attack so the blades experience a lifting force as they push
air downwards. Blow up the balloon and attach the
hub to the blade assembly and this jet reaction copter is all set to
soar! It
can attain a height of approximately 12 meters. With
fresh balloons, it will fly about 2 stories high. Newton's Third Law has to be
applied twice in order to explain the upward motion of the helicopter. The
exhausted gases force the fan to rotate, driving the air downward.
The reaction of wind, in turn, provides the lifting force for the
helicopter. The toy is comprised of three very light hollow plastic
helicopter blades that connect to a small plastic hub which connects to a
plastic tube with a flair on the bottom that allows a balloon to be easily
